Ginny Rutherford
Two Shores Pottery in Onancock, VA
Ginny grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia and fell in love with hand-building clay at an Art Center near her hometown in Delco. She pursued her love of art in college at Penn State University studying ceramics for 2 years, eventually earning her BFA in Painting.
As life happens, she married, settled in Cape May, NJ and raised 3 children…cobbling a life working various jobs including freelance art, restaurant work, a horse business and 20 years of teaching public school…all the while dreaming of one day revisiting her first love of clay.
When Cape May became too congested and commercialized, she moved to the Shore in 2021 seeking open space and a slower, quieter pace. Upon arrival, she connected with two artists who were moving out of the area and needed to unload their entire ceramics studio. Kismet! Instantly, she was a potter again!
She has been working from her garage in Onancock ever since, developing all of the ideas that have been swimming in her head for the past 50 years. Each vessel is formed by hand, using the coil or slab method and her work is inspired by the natural beauty and history of the Shore. She enjoys the vibrant art community here and is a member of the Eastern Shore Art League and the Artisans Guild of the Eastern Shore. She participates annually in the Guild’s studio tour and can be found the first Saturday of each month at the Onancock Market. Her work is also on display at the Wachapreague General Store in Wachapreague and at the Local-ISH Art gallery in Cape Charles.
